Preserving Our Heritage
A Rich History
In 2025, SJTC began the careful work needed to preserve the Sydney Street Courthouse from further deterioration: a critical first step in readying this landmark heritage building for its next chapter.
That work is now advancing. Phase 1 is officially underway, with crews on site completing masonry restoration on the rear of the building, shoring up the second and third floors, and stabilizing the structure around the building's iconic spiral staircases. This marks a meaningful shift; from the initial process of selective demolition and hazardous material removal, to the work of restoration and renewal.
In 2025 SJTC started the work needed to preserve the exterior masonry from further damage and prepare for the project.
By September 2026, the project will move into its next phase: breaking ground on the foundation for the addition that will transform the Courthouse into a world-class home for professional Atlantic theatre.
The building is being given back its future, one careful step at a time.
